Morebattle and Lemmie - Twins or Partners?

(Article published in the Spring edition of Cheviot - The Magazine for the Parish of Cheviot Churches: Church of Scotland)

What is the difference? We tend to think of twins being similar, if not almost identical.
Partners are typically different in all sorts of ways but need to be well matched.
When it comes to people, you don’t have any influence on who your twin is, but choosing a partner is something of a challenge, perhaps because there is a lot of choice.
Morebattle and Lemmie; do we strive to be twins or partners? We have some similarities: both are villages, both closely linked to a market town, and we are not that far from a major city. While community life in our villages is of great importance as are our traditions and history, how this is manifested seems to be very different.

Those of us from Lemmie who were lucky enough to come to Morebattle in September 2022 were thrilled and fascinated by the village, the countryside, the sense of the community and the people we met. We would like to find out more about life in your village and we would also love to welcome visitors from Morebattle to Lemmie and to be able return the wonderful hospitality we enjoyed in the Borders. We would like to be good partners, and this seems more and more important in the uncertain world we all are sharing with its wars, violence and changing climate.

One of our young farmers is adapting the challenge of climate change by pursuing agroforestry and has recently planted 156 walnut and 75 oleaster trees in one of his fields. It is still possible to plant traditional crops between the rows of trees but the area available is reduced and there are limits to size of machinery that can be used for harvesting. The trees serve to protect the soil and crops from extreme weather conditions, helping to avoid erosion while improving the supply of nutrients and water and the roots reinforce the structure of the soil. The trees, and in particular the oleasters, provide an attractive environment for birds, insects and small animals thus supporting biodiversity.
This is just one point of interest in Lemmie that we would be delighted to show to visitors from Morebattle and there are many more ideas we can suggest. Hannover, for example, has some fine museums and gardens or 22 pubs and clubs, so please us know what would interest you and we can suggest a program, including the other attractions here in north Germany. And there are plenty of homes and beds for our partners in Lemmie.

Die Reise nach Morebattle im September 2022

Die Idee zu einer Dorfpartnerschaft entstand zwischen den Schotten Stephen und Catherine Martin, die seit 30 Jahren in Lemmie leben, und Bernward Happe. Was kann ein kleines Dorf für einen Beitrag zur europäischen Identität leisten, nachdem der Brexit der britischen Politik den Austritt aus der europäischen Gemeinschaft beschlossen hatte.
Stephen Martins Tante lebt in Morebattle und er bahnte den Kontakt an. 5 Lemmier machten sich auf den Weg dorthin und waren begeistert von der herzlichen Aufnahme und den wunderbaren Begegnungen, die wir dort erleben durften.
Im Herbst erwarten wir einen Gegenbesuch.
Wir Lemmier wollen damit ein Zeichen setzen, wir wollen die europäische Idee aufgreifen, sozusagen über den Tellerrand schauen und interkulturelle Themen ins Dorf bringen. Unser Wunsch ist es besonders Kindern und Jugendlichen Schottland näher zu bringen, Videokonferenzen zwischen Lemmier und Morebattler Schüler sind geplant, vielleicht kann ein Schüleraustausch stattfinden oder die Vermittlung von Praktikumsplätzen für Jugendliche. Auf jeden Fall freuen wir uns über Begegnungen, gemeinsame Unternehmungen und gemeinsame Mahlzeiten. Unterbringung und Verköstigung unserer schottischen Gäste werden wir privat organisieren.

Schottischer Abend März 2023

Wir wollten das Schottland Thema lebendig halten, da wir sehr auf einen Gegenbesuch der Morebattler in diesem Herbst hoffen.
Es wurde ein schöner Abend. Ungefähr 45 Lemmier nahmen teil, unser Bürgermeister Heinrich Möller begrüßte die Gäste. Aus Moorebattle erreichte uns eine Videobotschaft: Barbara Bell (Gemeindevorsitzende aus Moorebattle) sagte, 'wir hoffen, dass dies der Beginn einer langen und fruchtbaren Beziehung zwischen unseren Gemeinden sein kann'. Das war toll und wir erfreuten uns an schottischen Gedichten von Robert Burns (schottischer Nationaldichter), hörten schottische Musik vorgetragen von Russell Thompson begleitet von Burkhard Hennecke, labten uns an leckeren schottischen Speisen und hatten viel Spaß beim Tanzen der schottischen Volkstänze , die eine kleine Lindener Tanzgruppe anführte.
Rundherum ein gelungener Abend.

Besuch aus Morebattle Juli 2023

Im Juli kamen Pete und Sue aus Morebattle auf Stippvisite nach Lemmie. Ihre Sommerreise führte sie durchs Weserbergland und sie trafen sich mit Stephen, Catherine und Christine von Scheidt zu einer Deisterwanderung, sehr schön durchs Walterbachtal bis hinauf zum Nordmannsturm. Anschließend waren sie als Gäste bei unserer Lemmier Sommerkneipe im Gutspark der Familie von Wedemeyer.
